Video Therapy
Video therapy can feel quite natural for most people. With your computer, tablet, or phone, you can connect from the comfort of home. I use a high-quality system, but all you need is your regular device. If you’d like, we can do a free consultation over video.
The Human Part of Video Therapy
When the pandemic hit, I switched overnight from occasionally doing online sessions to doing them all the time. I’m happy to say it’s been a comfortable transition for me and for the great majority of my clients. I pay a lot of attention to what voices and faces say about emotion and meaning, and those come through well via video. Some people don’t feel the same connection that they feel in person, however, and I respect that. They may do well to see someone in person.
Others, however, love skipping the commute and being able to do their session in the familiar comfort of their own spaces.
If you’re unsure, we can do a free consultation via video.
The Tech Part of Video Therapy
The online system I use, Simple Practice, makes is very easy to schedule online 24/7 and to get video links and reminders. Billing happens accurately, overnight, by credit card.
My clients use the typical devices: desktops, laptops, tablets, and cell phones. The cameras and microphones in almost all modern devices work well for video therapy. I’d say the bigger the screen, the better, but whatever’s comfortable for you will work fine.
Some clients use earbuds or headsets, but most use their devices’ built-in mics and speakers. All I’d recommend is to try to have some good light in front of you so I can see you well.
In order to see and hear you very well and to be seen and heard very well, I use a somewhat fancy system—recent iPhone camera into a desktop computer with a large, beautiful monitor (you’ll look good!). For a strong and stable internet connection, I use a wired connection—fiber optic and ethernet. Again, you don’t need anything more than your regular devices, but since I do this professionally, I’ve put some energy and money into a high-quality setup.
Is Video Therapy a Fit for You?
Again, if you think we’re a great fit, but you’re not sure about telehealth or online therapy, I’ll be glad to do a free consultation so we can feel it out.
